History

National Service Scheme is an Indian government-sponsored public service program conducted by the Ministry of Youth Affairsand Sports of the Government of India. Popularly known as NSS, the scheme was launched in Gandhiji’s Centenary year in 1969.

Goals

The educational goal of the NSS implies that besides gaining understanding of concepts like community, social structure, power conflict, etc. occurring in real life situations, students should acquire competence in the field of programme planning. Shouldering the responsibilities, participation in cooperative task and promotional work in the community.

The service goal of the NSS also calls educational approach in solving community problems. Its purpose is to help the community to recognize its needs and to assist in the mobilization of resources to meet these needs.

Objectives

Aimed at developing student’s personality through community service, NSS is a voluntary association of young people in Colleges, Universities and at +2 level working for a campus-community (esp. Villages) linkage.

Personality development through social service

Understand the community in which they work.
Understand themselves in relation to their community.
Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem solving process.
Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility.
Utilise their knowledge in finding practical solutions to individual and community problems.
Develop competence required for group living and sharing of responsibilities.
Gain skills in mobilizing community participation.
Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude.
Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters.
Practice national integration and social harmony.

Activities of N.S.S.

There are two types of activities: Regular Activities (120 hours) and Annual Special Camp (120 hours). All the NSS Volunteers who have served NSS for at least 2 years and have performed 240 hours of work under NSS are entitled to a certificate from the university under the signature of the Vice-Chancellor and the Programme Coordinator. The Annual camps are known as Special Camps. Camps are held annually, funded by the government of India, and are usually located in a rural village or a city suburb. Volunteers are involved in such activities as:

1. Cleaning of campus
2. Tree Plantation
3. Stage shows or a procession creating awareness of such issues as social problems, education and cleanliness
4. Awareness Rallies
5. Inviting doctors for health camps
6. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan
7. NSS winter camps
8. Cleaning campaign in the society
9. Afforestation through tree plantation
10. Creating awareness of such issues as social problems, education and cleanliness
11. Awareness Rallies about AIDS, environment, cleanliness
